Upcoming events

The February chapter meeting will be held from 12:45 – 4:45 at the Cedar Mill Community Library, which is west of downtown Portland. The link to a Google map is below, but it (and the library's address) can be confusing, which is why we are providing directions below.

Rick Wise, an Oregon native who pitched in the majors for 18 years and then was a pitching coach for another 23 years, will be our special guest. Rick won 188 games and pitched a no-hitter.

Another former player will also speak about his life and career, health permitting.

Research presentations will be made by members Tim Herlich and John Henshell. Tim earned the Doug Pappas Award for best oral presentation at the national convention in Washington, D.C. last year. For those of us who weren’t fortunate enough to be there, Tim will reprise his presentation titled "21." Tim’s topic is Tom Cheney’s 21-strikeout game in 1962. John will present “Reversing the aging process in baseball (Danny Darwinism)- part 3.” He will analyze and attempt to resolve a couple of the big questions about PED usage: (1) what percentage of players used/use? and (2) how much difference do PEDs make?

Mike Rice will host a Mariners roundtable discussion. An offseason full of startling and dramatic moves provided plenty to discuss.

DIRECTIONS:

The library is about a mile northwest of Hwy. 26 and one turn away. Coming from Washington or anywhere north of downtown Portland, take I-5 south to I-405 (Fremont Bridge). Take I-405 to 26 (it only goes west there). Take the Cedar Hills exit. Turn right at the exit, then immediately get in the left lane. Turn left on Barnes Rd. Barnes Rd becomes Saltzman Rd. The library’s address is 12505 Northwest Cornell Road, but the parking lot entrance is actually on Saltzman.

You’ll see a modest strip mall with a Walgreen’s at the intersection of Saltzman and Cornell. The library is behind the strip mall. The library building has “meeting room” on it in big letters, which you can see from the intersection. Although you’ll find doors under the meeting room sign, they are for exiting only. Use the library’s main entrance. The meeting room is upstairs. You may bring food and beverages to the meeting, but you must leave no trace of them.

Coming from Tigard and points south in Oregon, take Hwy. 217 to Hwy. 26. Go west to the next exit, which is Cedar Hills. Follow the directions above from there.

From western Washington County, take 185th, 173rd, 158th, or Murray Blvd. to Cornell Rd. Turn left on Saltzman Rd.

From the coast, take 26 to the Murray Blvd. exit. Go north on Murray. Turn right on Cornell Rd. Turn left on Saltzman Rd.
