Winter 2005

Ten members of the Field of Dreams Chapter and their guests gathered on the afternoon of Saturday, January 15, 2005 at the Bulldog Theater, located in the Olmstead Center on the Drake University campus in Des Moines.

The Iowa Cubs' annual Fan Fest had wrapped up earlier in the day. The I-Cubs provided the chapter with an exhibit booth at the fest, where Ralph Christian, Steve Elsberry, and Tim Rask spread the word about SABR. Thanks to a prime location between the Minnesota Twins booth and a large memorabilia booth, many fest attendees stop to peruse SABR publications and inquire about the organization.

The chapter conducted a brief business meeting, primarily to plan events for the upcoming year.

As in year's past, the chapter will meet this summer at one of Iowa 's minor league baseball parks. The date for this summer will be Sunday, June 12 at Alliant Energy field in Clinton. Tim Rask will explore group ticket options for the day and will distribute that information at a later time.

Mike Coveyou suggested that a fall meeting be held during the first weekend of the Major League playoffs. The MLB regular season wraps up on October 2, so the date would be the weekend of October 8/9. The consensus of the group was to explore locations in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area, such as Bill Zuber's restaurant in Homestead (Amana Colonies) or the National Czech and Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids . The idea is to have research presentations first, followed by the viewing of some first round playoff action. Tim Rask will inquire on the cost and availability of meeting locations for further action at the June meeting.

Following business, R.J. Lesch presented the trivia contest. Steve Bennett won the “members” portion of the quiz, while Will Bennett took top honors among the non-SABR members. Steve therefore has the privilege of drafting the quiz for the next meeting. (And look out, because it sounds as if he's already thinking up questions.)

After our meeting, the Friends of the Bob Feller Museum conducted their annual meeting in the Bulldog Theater. After their meeting concluded, Steve Holmes of Iowa City presented his film on the minor leagues, The New Ball Game. More information about the film may be found at Steve's website,
