Fifteen to twenty (to be honest, I forgot to count) SABR members and guests gathered at Drake University's Howard Hall for the January meeting of the Field of Dreams Chapter, held following the Iowa Cubs' Annual Fan Fest on January 31, 2004.

For a research presentation, members were treated to Ralph Christian's reprise of his fine presentation from the Denver Convention. Ralph covered the "Des Moines Connection" to the infamous Black Sox scandal of 1919, outlining the involvement of Des Moines brothers Dave and Abe Zelcer in organizing the fix of the World Series.

Next, Julie Bailey, the Executive Director of The Bob Feller Museum in Van Meter, briefly addressed the gathering. We appreciate Julie's visit, and certainly hope to work closely with the museum in the future.

Future meeting plans were discussed, including the possibility of a "Tri-Chapter" meeting with the Wisconsin and Minnesota chapters, possibly in Madison, Wisconsin. Details will be released as that develops. Among other possible meeting sites and dates are mid-August in Keokuk, when a reunion of Keokuk's minor league alumni will be held. Other possible sites for future meetings are Waterloo, Clinton, and, for those on the western side of the state, Sioux City.

In chapter elections, Tim Rask was elected to succeed R.J. Lesch as Umpire-in-Chief, Ralph Christian was elected as "Base Umpire," and Steve Elsberry will continue as "Concessionaire." Charles Crawley will continue in the position of Scorecard Keeper (webmaster).

Special thanks to outgoing "Umpire," R.J. Lesch, whose role in creating the Field of Dreams chapter never can be understated! Thanks finally to Alex Kleiner for arranging the use of Howard Hall on the Drake campus!
