The latest meeting of the Field of Dreams Chapter of SABR was held Saturday, January 21 on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines .

To start the day, and the weekend, Ralph Christian, Steve Elsberry, Tim Rask, and Charles Crawley spent some time “working” at the SABR booth at the Iowa Cubs Fan Fest. A favorable location allowed us plenty of opportunity to spread the word about SABR to the baseball fans roaming the Knapp Center . Thanks to Ralph for arranging for the booth, and thanks to Steve for bringing his laptop (his downloads of Cal Ripken's 2,131 st game and Kerry Wood's 20 strikeout game generated a lot of traffic).

After Fan Fest, we moved across campus to Howard Hall, where the meeting convened at 3pm . The focus of the meeting was to discuss the proposal for the chapter to create a book on Iowa baseball history. Charles Crawley presented the draft proposal, which was then discussed. The coming weeks will be critical in getting the book project off the ground (assembling authors, topics, etc.). A working meeting to discuss the book will be set up early in March. Check http://fieldofdreams.sabr.org frequently for updates.

The members also had a brief discussion of research methods, including examination of online sources (such as Proquest and Paper of Record), and such local sources as the State of Iowa Historical Society Library branches in Des Moines and Iowa City.

Sadly, there was no trivia contest this meeting, but we will pick that up at the next meeting in the summer.

The next chapter meeting is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, June 10 in the Waterloo area. We hope to take in a Waterloo Bucks Northwoods League game after the meeting. Tim Rask, Umpire-in-Chief, Field of Dreams Chapter
