Sixteen SABR members and guests gathered on Sunday afternoon, October 9 at Bill Zuber's Restaurant in Homestead, Iowa for a Field of Dreams Chapter meeting.

It was an information-packed meeting, featuring four presentations by five chapter members.

Darrell Hanson led things off with a “Joe Boley, Forgotten Star,” a presentation on the career of the shortstop who enjoyed minor league success with Jack Dunn's Baltimore Orioles, and later moved onto the roster of Connie Mack's Philadelphia A's. Boley seems in retrospect to have been a marginal player at best, although contemporary accounts praised his fielding ability

R.J. Lesch introduced us to a pair of early 20 th Century ballplayers from Neola, Iowa—curiously both named Red. R.J. gave an overview of his upcoming Bio-project entries on the lives of Red Morgan and Red Downs.

Steve Smith and Ralph Christian told the story of Babe Ruth's final public appearance, which occurred in June 21, 1948. The Bambino was in town as promotion of youth baseball, which was sponsored by the Ford Motor Company. Illness forced Ruth to cancel his remaining tour dates, and he passed away two months later.

Steve Elsberry concluded the afternoon with some fun facts about one of his favorite baseball statistics—the pinch-hit grand slam.

And even after a full afternoon, we still had time to catch the end of the Astros-Braves 18-inning marathon.

The next meeting will be held in January, in conjunction with the Iowa Cubs Fanfest. More details will follow at a later date.

Oh, and I almost forgot about the trivia contest! Steve Smith took top honors this time, tallying the high score on the quiz written by R.J. Lesch. Keith Krewer came in second, and Steve Elsberry came home in third. Tim Rask, Umpire-in-Chief, Field of Dreams (Iowa) Chapter
