Larry Tye is the author of the best-selling biography of Satchel Paige. An avid baseball fan, Larry now runs a Boston-based training program for medical journalists. Everyone who has read his work knows he will give us an interesting and lively discussion about one of baseball’s most enduring characters and greatest pitchers of all time.

Bill Monbouquette, a pitcher for the Red Sox from 1958 to 1965, will also be here. Need we say more? Bill has the reputation of being a no-nonsense guy who tells it like it is. He has attended meetings before and we look forward to hearing is take on baseball, then and now.

Fernando Perez is not your run-of-the-mill professional athlete. A speedy outfielder who made his big-league debut in early September 2008 and went on to play in both the ALCS and World Series. He appeared in 18 games for the Rays after missing much of the campaign with a wrist injury. The 25-year-old New Yorker is not only a big part of the Rays’ future, he also holds a degree in American Studies and Creative Writing from Columbia University. He sat down with Boston Chapter co-chair David Laurila in September 2008  to talk about his views on both baseball and life.

The Boston Chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research announces their Hot Stove Winter Meeting on Monday, January 18, 2010, 11am to 4pm at The Baseball Tavern, second floor meeting room, 1270 Boylston Street, Boston – one block from Fenway Park. Once again we have a stellar lineup of presentations by an all-star cast.

DATE: Monday, January 18, 2010
TIME: 11 AM to 4:30 PM
LOCATION: The Baseball Tavern,
1270 Boylston Street, Boston  MAP

There will also be the lunch buffet for $10 provided by The Tavern. Please let us know if you are interested so I can provide the cook with a head count. A $5 donation to help defray meeting costs is humbly requested.  We also have received a donation of books for the raffle from our compadres to the south. The Southern New England  Chapter has kindly given us three boxes of high quality baseball reading material, so bring your donations to add to the inventory and plan on returninghome a few new ones as well. We have a few time slots available for Ten-Minute Presentations. Let me know if you are interested.
Stay tuned for more information as it become available. The meeting looks to be a one-day Hot Stove League Convention extraordinaire. We hope you can be there on January 18 –  the birthday of 36 players,  including Curt Flood, Charlie Eden, Pinky May and Eddie Moore  who played 54 games for the Boston Braves in 1926.
All we are unable to come up with is the ghost of Babe Ruth – keep in mind that January 20 is the 90th anniversary of his departure from Boston to New York – and we all know the rest of the story.

If you have not been to a meeting at The Tavern, be advised that it is located one block from Fenway Park. There are parking lots in the area, or it is otherwise advised to take public transportation as the best way to get there. The Tavern is nearest the Kenmore or Fenway stations on the Green Line.

The Home Run Derby Party, July 13, 2009
Written by SABR Boston
Monday, 13 July 2009 00:00

The word is out, the menu is all set and the speakers are on the lineup card. The Home Run Derby Party at The Baseball Tavern, 1270  Boylston Street, Boston is coming together. The July 13, Monday night gathering begins at 6PM, and dinner will be served around 7 PM. Feel free to arrive at any time. We will forgo any formalities as we talk baseball into the evening and keep an eye on the Home Run Derby.

The weather gods have cooperated, the rain has finally stopped in New England, so the meeting on the open-air upper deck will not be threatened with a rain delay.

The Boston Chapter will also commemorate the 50th anniversary of Pumpsie Green's arrival with the Red Sox and we'll hear commentary from John Holway about baseball and integration and Bill Nowlin, who has interviewed Pumpsie.
Saul Wisnia will have copies of his new book, "For the Love of the Boston Red Sox" so plan on acquiring an addition to your library.

Let me know if you are planning on attending for dinner, so that we'll be sure to have enough food, and we hope to see you there on Monday night.

2009 Spring meeting: Saturday, April 11, 2009

Saturday, 11 April 2009 00:00

What better way to celebrate the start of the baseball season than a gathering from 10:30 am to 4 pm at The Baseball Tavern on Saturday, April 11, 2009! The Baseball Tavern, 1270 Boylston Street, one block from Fenway Park is the place to be on this first weekend after Opening Day.

We have a great program coming  together featuring  contributors of the soon-to-be published "Lefty, Double-X and the Kid, A Team in Transition." We expect to have copies of the book available.

Other speakers will be Paul Zinn, author of "The Major League Pennant Races of 1916:The Most Maddening Baseball Melee in History" and Gabriel Schechter who recently published "This Bad Day in Yankee History" -  days, he will tell us, that were often very GOOD days in Red Sox history.

There will be several presentations by Boston-area students as well. There are still a few potential speakers who are trying to free up their busy schedules in order to attend the meeting, so stay tuned for any later additions. Lunch is available at The Tavern, and the Red Sox-Angels game begins after the meeting. Plan on sticking around for more baseball.

2009 Winter meeting: Monday, January 19, 2009
Written by SABR Boston
Monday, 19 January 2009 00:00

Plans have come together for the January 19, MLK weekend meeting of the Boston Chapter. An interesting lineup of speakers have been brought together for this much needed mid-winter gathering featuring baseball talk and a just plain good excuse for a break from the winter weather we've been enduring. As Boston's baseball fans are well aware, there's alot going on over at Fenway Park lately - and it's not all about the ballpark renovations -  and we'll be spending time with armchair analysis and second guessing.

The meeting will begin at 11 AM and last until 4 PM - or a bit longer as we get long winded.

A $5 donation is humbly requested

The meeting will take place at The Baseball Tavern, 1270 Boylston Street, Boston, second floor meeting room with its panoramic view of the right field wall of Fenway Park. Public transportation via the MBTA is encouraged. The Tavern is best reached from the Kenmore Square station on the Green line. Find Brookline Ave,  take a short walk and pay homage to Fenway Park along Yawkey Way, and proceed to the intersection of Yawkey and Boylston Street, turn left and the Baseball Tavern is just beyond McDonald's.
There is also parking in the vicinity of Fenway Park.

Lunch is available at the Tavern. You can sign up for the lunch buffet provided by the Tavern staff, for $10, when you arrive.

Two months ago, Rick Swanson sent me one of his memorable e-mails detailing his latest behind the scenes' dealings with the Red Sox organization. Anyone who remembers  Rick's presentations at earlier meetings will recall his entertaining and downright mindbending talks. I predict he will not disappoint. If he mentions half of what he sent me in that latest e-mail, his talk should not be missed. He's a classic fan.

We will also hear from Jared Carrabis who was named the Red Sox Nation Massachusetts Governor.  He will tell us how he came to that lofty position, and he has stated he is thrilled to be invited to the meeting. We hope he'll still be thrilled after we have a little "Wait, wait, Don't Tell Me" sort of fun with him!

David Lambert of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society discovered Sy Simmons, the oldest living Negro Leaguer. He will talk about the discovery and also how genealogical and historical research come together for baseball research.

We will also hear from Daigo Fujiwara about the latest acquisitions of Japanese players by the Red Sox.

Brian Sheehy of the New England Vintage Baseball Association has the latest news on the Irish National Baseball Team with connections to Boston.

If you have an item for the raffle table, bring it along. Every little bit helps toward future programs.

We hope to see you there for the upcoming mid-winter, therapeutic Hot Stove Meeting in Boston.
