And the Skipper Bats Cleanup--A History of the Baseball Player-Manager
Written by Fred Stein
Thursday, 11 June 2009 09:21

Publisher: McFarland & Co.
Publication Date: 2002

As far  back as 1842 through the late 1930s and mid-1940s, before baseball became completely commercialized and teams were able to hire one man to manage the entire team, it was not uncommon for one person to fill the roles of player and manager simultaneously. Forty-two of the men who were both players and managers at the same time are profiled informally and with many   anecdotes. These include such men as Cap Anson, Connie Mack, Charles Comiskey, John McGraw, Mickey Cochrane, Ty Cobb, Bill Terry, Joe Cronin, and Lou Boudreau, just to name a few.

A Well-Paid Slave: Curt Flood's Fight for Free Agency in Professional Sports
Written by Brad Snyder
Thursday, 11 June 2009 09:11

Publisher: Viking
Publication date: 2007 paper ed.

After the 1969 season, the St. Louis Cardinals traded Flood, their star center fielder, to the Philadelphia Phillies. At the time there was no such thing as free agency, no no-trade clauses. When a player was traded, he reported to his new team or retired.

Unwilling to choose either option and influenced by his participation in the civil rights movement, Flood sacrificed his career to sue Major League Baseball for his freedom.  His case reached the Supreme Court, where Flood ultimately lost, but created an atmosphere in which, three years later, free agency became a reality.  For today’s generation of multi-million dollar athletes, Flood is a Jackson Robinson-like figure who gave them the opportunity to choose where and for whom they played.
