SABR at the Orioles: What a Great Time
Written by Bruce Brown
Those of you who joined us know what an enjoyable day we had.  For those of you not quite so fortunate, we present the following summary:

- The first stop was the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum, where Executive Director (and SABR member) Michael Gibbons discussed plans for future joint projects between the Bob Davids chapter and the museum.  He also declared that SABR member would have their entrance fee waived.  He probably only meant it to be for that day, but the regular fee is so reasonable, you'll barely notice the difference.  The museum is a wealth of information and entertainment for everyone.

- The 22 of us who opted to take the walking tour of Oriole Park at Camden Yards were hosted by Marty, the senior guide on the staff there.  We can say, somewhat immodestly, that we added to his body of knowledge, but we are quick to add that the tour was a highlight of the day and that Marty was as amiable as he was professional.  The ballpark is a gem and Marty made it shine.

- The rest of our group joined us next for a tour of the Sports Legends museum, adjacent to the ballpark, where Michael Gibbons himself was our docent.  And a decent docent  he was, even allowing us into the crypt, er... archives of the building.

My name is Fred Glueckstein. As a SABR member, I have had the honor to speak about my latest book Mickey Mantle: Rookie in Pinstripes at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards.

"Mickey Mantle: Rookie in Pinstripes" is the uplifting true story of how a painfully shy teenager from rural Commerce, Oklahoma, became one of the biggest stars in Major League Baseball. Raised during the Depression, Mickey learned how to catch, hit, and field the ball from his father, Elvin. In high school, Mickey suffered a football injury that revealed a serious bone disorder. He wondered if he would ever play baseball again. But with the support and love of his father, he overcame his affliction and signed with the New York Yankees in 1949. A moving story of Mickey's early years in baseball, from his difficult rookie season to his triumphant return in 1951.

"Mickey Mantle: Rookie in Pinstripes" is published by iUniverse, a strategic partner of Barnes & Noble.  The book is available online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

If you are interested in a signed hardcover or paperback copy of the book, please contact me at fredglueckstein@msn.com.

Written by David Vincent
Tuesday, 02 February 2010 12:06
The Bob Davids Chapter, SABR’s oldest chapter, met in Arlington, VA with over 120 members and friends in attendance. In spite of the wintery weather, the gathering enjoyed research presentations by five chapter members and a buffet lunch. The principal speakers were Bryan Minniti, Assistant General Manager of the Washington Nationals, and former Orioles pitcher and current minor league coach Scott McGregor.
