JOE TORRE: Managing Major League Baseball
Wednesday, February 15, 7:00 P.M.
“Finding good players is easy. Getting them to play as a team is another story.” ~ Casey Stengel
What makes a great baseball manager? Although few can recite baseball managerial records, the legendary Casey Stengel remains an icon for all fans. Like Stengel, Joe Torre managed the Yankees and the Mets, the Dodgers, and the Braves—as well as the Cardinals.
Torre, currently Major League Baseball’s executive vice president of Baseball Operations, spent twenty-nine years as a major league manager, and led the Yankees to six pennants and four World Series championships in twelve seasons.
This evening, he provides an insider’s look at managing a major league baseball team. Appearing with Torre are Mike Wise of the Washington Post, Johnny Holliday from Nats Xtra, and SABR’s own Phil Wood, Washington Examiner columnist and sports commentator on MidAtlantic Sports Network. The discussion is moderated by another SABR member, Phil Hochberg, former Washington Senators stadium announcer.
