Announcing Chapter Classifieds
Written by Jim Sweetman
Thursday, 17 December 2009 18:28
The Bob Davids Chapter of SABR is adding a new service for its members–a twice-monthly classifieds e-mail.

You can use this to promote your baseball book, a baseball event or other stuff baseball-related (for example, the two ads below in this inaugural e-mail are looking for people to join a fantasy baseball league and a Nationals ticket group). This is how it will work:

By the 1st or 15th of each month, send your classified ad to SABRDavids@aol.com. The guidelines:

1) To be used by chapter members
2) Max 200 words, text only
3) Baseball-related ads only
4) There is no cost

The Chapter will send out the e-mail to all chapter members by within a few days of the cut-off. Members will only receive the e-mail ads clearly labeled as such.

Here are our first ads. Feel free to respond to them.

Six Decades of Baseball is the memoire that any long time baseball fan could have written and will certainly relate to. Based on nearly sixty years of baseball “fandom”, author Bill Lewers weaves a decade-by-decade narrative full of games, players, experiences, observations, and opinions - all the “stuff” that any baseball fan accumulates over a lifetime. If you are the sort of person who enjoys “talking baseball” with co-workers at the office or perfect strangers at the ball park, then this just might be a book that you would enjoy.

A more detailed description can be found at www.sixdecadesofbaseball.com.

Hi – this is Bob Kominski, fellow SABR member. For the past 25 years, a group of friends and I have participated in a statistical baseball league playing a game I developed. Simply explained, the game – Boxscore Baseball – pits teams against one another in a daily contest, and is scored by using the stats that appear in the daily box scores. A set of nine statistics, including hitting, pitching and fielding are used to determine the outcome of "innings" in each game. Teams are constructed over the winter in an 11-week blind auction process using $1 million of (virtual) assigned funds for each team. During the season, trades, free agents and waivers of reserve players allow owners the chance to change their teams. The auction for our 2010 season will begin January 18, and we are looking for a few new owners to play our statistically challenging game. If this brief description sounds interesting to you, please email me at and I’ll be happy to send you a set of rules so you can get a fuller understanding of the game.

We have a long-standing Nationals ticket group that is looking to fill the last share for 2010. We have two sets of seats: 4 club seats in the third row of Section 213 right behind the plate ($55 each), and 2 box seats in Section 117 ($50 each). These are just about the best seats in the ballpark in their price ranges and are better than you can get by getting your own ticket plan. A share is about 20 pairs of tickets and costs about $2000-$2200 and includes 20 coupons, each good for a free ticket in the box/club seats (essentially 50% extra tickets for free), and a half-share is 10 pairs of tickets and 10 coupons and runs about $1000-$1100. The tickets are allocated via a draft. If you want more information or you are interested, please contact Dave Raglin at or 703-835-1198.

37th Annual Chapter Meeting set for January 30, 2010

Football is an OK filler for some. Hockey and basketball have their place and having an MLB channel on TV is great and all, but we’ve got what you know you need: Baseball and baseball in a great format! You are hereby invited to the annual meeting of the Bob Davids Chapter, the 37th such.

What: A gathering of a Triple Baseball SABR Convergence -
1.) The chapter’s annual meeting. If you've never been, please come join us. You'll never want to miss.
2.) Celebration of National SABR Day. SABR chapters around the world will be meeting on this same day. The national office is mounting a concerted effort to raise the profile of the organization and we are proud to be a part of that effort.
3.) Approval of chapter By-Laws and Election of Officers. The Bob Davids Chapter continues to grow and so do the responsibilities. A draft of the proposed document for ratification will be sent to members in the next few days.

When: Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010 from 9:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.

Who:
  • Scott McGregor – All-Star left-handed pitcher for the Orioles from 1976 to 1988. Scott pitched twice in the World Series and is currently the pitching coach for the Aberdeen Iron Birds. An ordained minister, Scott is an accomplished public speaker.
  • Nationals Assistant GM Bryan Minniti
  • Dave Smith – Entertaining research which answers questions asked of Dave by the baseball media in 2009. Dave is a chapter member.
  • Mike Henderson – Mike, also a chapter member, blogs about the Nationals at http://www.nationalspride.com/columnists/?blog=hendo and will talk about the newly-retooled team and its prospects for the upcoming season.
  • Research – A few more presentations by members, representing the essence of SABR. If you would like to make a brief research presentation, please submit your idea to Barry Sparks at bsparks243@aol.com.
In addition, there is likely to be:
- Baseball trivia – Might be trivial; might be important.
- Regional baseball authors – With their works available
- Camaraderie – Mingle with SABR friends. Make new ones.
- Vendors of baseball books and related material
- Raffle, where you could go home with baseball books and other items (many hard-to-find ones) while helping to raise funds for the chapter by your participation. A raffle tickets is still only an inflation-busting $1 or 10 tickets for $5.

SPEAKING BASEBALL’S LANGUAGE: Smithsonian Program Planned
Written by The Editor
Wednesday, 08 April 2009 10:20

In conjunction with the publication of Paul Dickson’s monumental third edition of his Baseball Dictionary and the SABR National Convention, the Smithsonian Associates is putting on a program on the “Language of Baseball” at 7:30 p.m., July 29, featuring Dickson and Phil Hochberg, former stadium announcer for the Washington Senators.

Attendees will hear the background of Dickson’s 10,000 entries and 18.000 definitions – and try to stump him with ones he may not have included.  There is a special admission price for SABR members of $15.  The event will be held at the Ripley Center, 1100 Jefferson Drive, SW, Washington, D.C.  For tickets, call (202) 633-3030 or contact www.ResidentAssociates.org.

BRANCHING OUT: Bethesda Big Train Seeks to Expand its Management Team
Written by The Editor
Wednesday, 08 April 2009 10:19

The Bethesda Big Train summer collegiate baseball team is in its 11th season of operation.  It plays at Shirley Povich Field in Cabin John Regional Park in North Bethesda, not far from Westfield Montgomery Mall. Big Train is a team in the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League.

The team has been successful in many ways.  Five of its former players have made it to the major leagues:  John Maine, Charlton Jimerson, Bobby Livingston, Steve Schmoll and Dirk Hayhurst.  About a third of its players play professional baseball after they graduate from college.  The organization has raised over $500,000, which it has donated in support of improvements to youth ball fields in Montgomery County and the District of Columbia.  It has welcomed more than 150,000 fans to watch Big Train games at Povich Field, a ballpark it built in partnership with the Montgomery County Parks Foundation.

We see the potential to do even more good works in the field of baseball, if we can get more volunteer help with the year-round management of the organization.  The team is seeking volunteers to fill the positions of Marketing Director, Assistant Marketing Director, Fund-Raising Director, Press Relations Director, Program Director (game night entertainment), Publications Director, Community Relations Director, Ballfield Facility Planner and Accountant/Bookkeeper.

If you have experience in any of these areas and a passion for baseball that you would like to convert into active management of a baseball operation, please contact Bill Hickman at volunteer@bigtrain.org.  We have position descriptions for each of these volunteer jobs and would be pleased to provide you with more specific information about them.
